Writing Better Task Descriptions

By Sarah M.

8 March . 2026

Learn how to write clear, effective task descriptions that help Syntera's AI produce better plans and cleaner code on the first try.

Getting Started

Start with the outcome, not the implementation. A clear prompt gives Syntera enough context to produce a cleaner first draft.

Tell Syntera what success looks like

Describe the user outcome, the stack, and any hard constraints before asking for code. Start building

"Create a sign-in flow for our Next.js app using the existing form components and redirect successful users to /dashboard."

Structuring the Task

Before generating code, structure the task so the model understands both context and intent.

  • • What already exists
  • • What needs to change
  • • What must not change
  • • What good output looks like

Covering Implementation Surfaces

A strong task description usually covers the core implementation surfaces up front:

  • • UI expectations
  • • Business logic
  • • Data or API touchpoints
Plain Text
Add a sign-in page to the Next.js app.
Use the existing Button and Input components.
Validate email format client-side.
Show inline field errors.
Redirect to /dashboard on success.

Specifying Auth Requirements

When auth is part of the task, mention it explicitly. Syntera performs better when the auth expectations are not implied.

  • • Login method
  • • Session behavior
  • • Protected routes
  • • Error and empty states

Billing and Payments

If billing is involved, specify the pricing model and the system boundaries so the generated plan stays practical.

  • • Subscription or one-time payment
  • • Provider to use
  • • Webhook requirements
  • • Post-payment user state

Pre-Ship Checklist

The last pass on a task description should remove ambiguity before you ship the request to Syntera.

  • • Name the target environment
  • • Mention required env vars
  • • Call out performance or SEO constraints
  • • Include review criteria

Conclusion

Spending 2 extra minutes on your task description saves hours of revision. The best prompts read like a ticket you would confidently hand to a senior engineer.
